The Acropolis is one of the most famous sites in the world and no visit to Athens will be complete without seeing it. The name Acropolis means the Citadel or the sacred rock. It was during the golden age of Athens, in the period of Pericles, that most of the famous temples were built. The most famous architect of the era was Phidias.
